Assistant Professor (Geotechnical Engineering)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at SIUC invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position in Geotechnical Engineering at the rank of Assistant Professor.

SIUC is located in Carbondale, Illinois and enrolls approximately 21,000 students. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is one of five departments within the College of Engineering. The Department offers Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS) and Master of Engineering (ME) degrees in Civil Engineering. A Ph.D. in Engineering Science is offered through the College. The BS in Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202; 410-347-7700). The Department has 14 faculty members, approximately 230 undergraduate students and 35 graduate students.

Duties and Responsibilities: Position responsibilities include teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels; developing curricula, carrying out scholarly activities and funded research; supervising the work of M.S., M.E., and Ph.D. students; developing and maintaining externally-funded research program in the area of expertise; and collaborating with other faculty on research and professional development activities and relevant professional activities.

The person selected for the position will:

• Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses as assigned by the department chair.
• Actively participate in the senior design course.
• Develop an externally funded research program in her/his area of research.
• Carry out research and supervise the work of M.S., M.E., and Ph.D. students.
• Actively participate in scholarly activities by publishing the results of her/his research in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
• Provide service to the department, college, university, and profession. This includes participation in international and national professional society activities.

Requirements:

• Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering and an earned doctorate in Civil Engineering or related field with concentration in Geotechnical Engineering by the time of hire.
• Professional experience is preferred.
• Professional licensure is preferred and will be required for tenure.
• Applicants must have a demonstrated potential for high quality research and teaching with research documented by publications. The department provides support and excellent opportunities for the development of new faculty.

Effective Date of Appointment: Anticipated starting date is August 16, 2010.
