Position Announcement
Research Eco-Geomorphologist
(Post-doc)
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Department of Zoology and
Center for Ecology
Southern Illinois University Carbondale
Job Title: Research Eco-Geomorphologist
Job Category: Post-doc
Discipline: Eco-Hydromorphology
Job Description: A post-doctoral research position is available for a highly motivated individual interested in interactions between hydrodynamic conditions and ecosystem functioning. Examples of research questions to be explored are (1) how do hydraulic conditions in near-bank and floodplain regions affect aquatic ecosystem structure and function? (2) what can be done to improve the accuracy of near-bank and floodplain velocity predictions obtained from 2D hydraulic models? and (3) can characteristics (e.g., habitat features, ecosystem structure and function, etc.) observed in sub-reaches of a channel be scaled to longer reaches and, if so, what are the necessary conditions?
The successful candidate will work closely with SIUC faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Department of Zoology and Center for Ecology; and will be involved in designing and directing field experiments, and writing proposals and peer-reviewed journal articles.
Funding for this position is through the National Center for Earth-surface Dynamics (NCED) an NSF Science and Technology Center (http://www.nced.umn.edu/). NCED’s research focus is channels and channel networks with a strong emphasis on linking ecology and morphodynamics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with other NCED researchers.
Job Requirements: Quantitative proficiency and a taste for collaborative research are essential; experience in fluvial morphodynamics and/or river ecology is highly desirable. A Ph.D. is required at the date of appointment.
Pay Scale: The salary is negotiable and includes benefits.
Start Date: The position is available immediately and there is funding for at least one-year.
Closing Date: June 30, 2009, or until the position is filled.
